Casa Tenuta Mariano, Camporeale, Sicily

Calogero  Leone, a lawyer from an aristocratic Sicilian family from Palermo, produces biologic olive oil as well as some quality wines from this winery which extends over 128 hectares. Excellent opportunities are available for walking and cycling both on the estate itself and in the surrounding rolling countryside and as well as the olive groves and vineyards to wander through, there are citrus orchards and rose gardens, a flood lit tennis court and an extensive and amazingly verdant lawn amidst which is a 4m x4m plunge pool surrounded by decking; a small paradise perfect for cooling off mid day.

This wonderful Villa, converted from the old stables of the winery offers a rare opportunity to live for a brief time steeped in the historical past of an aristocratic rural Sicilian family. The spacious rooms are very comfortably furnished and the walls are hung with family paintings and decorations. The traditional colours of green and red are used to great effect to create a handsome and distinctive style. French windows open onto a wide covered terrace with lovely views over the surrounding countryside.

The lovely spacious living room has a sitting and dining area with high beamed ceilings that reach up into the eaves, where there is a romantic galleried double bedroom with an ensuite shower room. A large second bedroom is on the ground floor with twin beds and its own shower room. The modern kitchen is well equipped with all the conveniences of full cooker, fridge/freezer, dishwasher and washing machine.

Adjoining the Casa is a simply enormous and undisputedly wonderful demonstration kitchen, fashioned out of the original stables and available to guests who would like to learn more about Sicilian gastronomy.  A professor at a distinguished cookery school in Palermo, Chef Baldo, can be booked to arrive with all the ingredients and wine for a 3 course meal. When the half day lesson is complete, Chef Baldo and his team will tidy and clear away  leaving the students to begin the serious work of dining.  Lessons can be booked for one day or as a course, please ask if you would like more details. Chef Baldo will also prepare and cook a three course meal without your assistance if you prefer your meals conjured up without participating in the magic!

Calogero and Eva will welcome you to their estate and will no doubt give you ample opportunity to taste and purchase their wines. They are very happy for guests to enjoy the tracks and paths of their vineyards and olive groves, of which they are justifiably proud and since the whole area is criss crossed with paths, this is ideal walking country. Or follow the Strada dei Vini on foot, crossing in the process some of the best vineyards between Camporeale and Alcamo.  Restaurants and Supermarkets can be found in the local towns of Camporeale and San Ciperollo 10 mins drive away.

Entirely independent, Villa Tenuta Mariano, is an approximate 60 meters away. This is a 4 bedroom house with which the Casa shares the use of the plunge pool and the tennis court and for a larger party, the two houses can be taken together. With tennis, walking, pre-arranged cookery classes and wine tasting available on site, all the ingredients are assembled for a memorable holiday.

Casa Tenuta Mariano is well placed for exploring the island as being a 30 mins drive from the north coast and 1 hour from the south, all the historical sites on this side of the island are well within a reasonable day trip.
