Pefki Apartments, Agios Mattheos, Crete

Pefki, a nymph of the woodland in Greek mythology, is an appropriate name for this unique group of just six, elegant apartments sharing a huge 14m x 6m pool, surrounded by tall stately pines and set on the edge of a hillside, with magical views of Crete's distant White Mountains. Situated in Agios Matheos, an exclusive and heavily wooded neighbourhood of Chania, they are well above the hustle and bustle of the town but within easy reach of Chania's Venetian harbour just 5 minutes away by car or the local bus service. The lovely beaches of Kalathas and Stavros on the Akrotiri peninsula are no more than a 10 or 15 minute drive. Within walking distance there's a taverna with superb panoramic views towards Chania and the village of Kounoupidiana with a number of tavernas, bakers, supermarkets and banks is a convenient 5 minutes drive away
Designed to resemble the patrician style architecture of ancient Athens, the three elegant units, each containing two apartments are spaced well apart around one side of the pool, separated by pretty flower filled gardens with little tiled patios on different levels, separated by low stone walls. The finished result is very effective and this peaceful little enclave is certainly a place where any latter day Aristotle would feel at home, with numerous quiet corners to sit pondering on life's intricacies, or just dozing in the dappled sunshine. Certainly everyone who stays at these unique apartments is delighted by the wonderfully peaceful ambience.
The superb swimming pool, complete with an integral jacuzzi, also has a children's pool separated by a pretty wooden bridge.
Each apartment has a telephone, TV and a small safe for valuables. Although it is possible to use taxis and the local bus service to get in and out of Chania, we do strongly recommend car hire.
Parents Note: The terraces of this apartment are surrounded by low 45cm walls and we therefore consider it unsuitable for children less than 10 years.
A useful facility on departure and arrival day is a reception area with shower and W.C. and facilities to leave your luggage.

Pefki 5, one bedroom, sleeps 2/3.
The entrance to this apartment is at first floor level from a large, partially shaded balcony, furnished for dining, with a lovely view of the pool and a glimpse of the blue sea through a filigree border of green pine fronds.
Inside, the open plan living room has two fitted sofas and a coffee table with an intimate little dining area to the rear. To one side is the smart kitchenette with stained pine cupboards, a 2-ring cooker with oven and grill, as well as a small fridge. Next to this is the shower room. French doors open on to the aforesaid terrace and a second set open to another balcony, with lovely views towards Chania and the distant mountains, on the other side of the living room, providing a cooling through breeze, bringing with it the constant soft melody of bird song or cicadas from the trees above. The lovely sunny bedroom with large double bed is romantically set in the eaves at the top of an open wooden staircase.

The focal point of Western Crete is the handsome town of Chania with its bustling covered market, fascinating old quarter steeped in history and the remarkable, picturesque Venetian harbour where dining by night at one of the many tavernas and soaking up the almost mediaeval atmosphere is an unforgettable experience. The town also has many modern shops and a number of supermarkets as well as numerous small bars and a few sophisticated night-clubs. Beyond the harbour is a good sandy beach fringed by some excellent fish tavernas. A regular bus service makes it easy to reach a greater choice of beaches a few miles west of the town.
