Freelance's "Greek Hotels" Selection

Hotel Porto Loutro, Loutro, Crete

This small 18 room hotel, perched right on the edge of the beach provides its clientele with a touch more comfort and sophistication than the other pension style accommodation available in the village.

The hotel also has its own small bar and sun terrace where breakfast which is included, unless you are staying in the self catering studios, is normally served. The bar is open throughout the day and also serves light lunches.

Hotel Porto Loutro II is the second hotel and a little gem, sculpted out of the hillside to the west of the village, with breathtaking views.  Reached from the quayside tavernas below, by a small path and 30 steps, the hotel has its own bar, plus a breakfast terrace overlooking the sea.  All bedrooms have traditional beamed ceilings, marble tiled shower rooms and of course,  seaviews and are slightly more spacious.

All rooms, in both hotels are equipped with refrigerators.

Both hotels are owned by Stavros and his English wife Alison, intriguingly different in character, but a very likeable couple who, during the summer live next door in a lovely old Venetian house. Alison runs the hotel with their daughter, Sophia, whilst Stavros has an interest in the local ferry company but, like most of the men in the village, prefers to spend his time fishing...

If you would prefer one hotel to the other please feel free to mention this on the booking form, but we ask yout to understand  that whilst we will do all we can to meet your requirements, it is by request only and cannot be guaranteed.

The hotel has 4 studios at ground floor level, which share a patio overlooking the beach. All the studios have fans and are furnished and equipped to the same high standard as the hotel, but are slightly more spacious

Getting to Loutro
The ferry trip takes about 15 minutes and there are 4 or 5 ferries a day in each direction.  We can arrange taxi transfers for you from Chania or Heraklion airport to Chora Sfakion.  If you should miss the last ferry, it is not a problem as we will either arrange for you to stay overnight in Chora Sfakion, or you will be collected by private boat at no extra cost.  That’s because in Loutro, Cretan hospitality starts even before you arrive!

Hotel Porto Loutro, Twin Rooms

The twin rooms all have fans and are particularly well-furnished and attractive. Crisp cotton bed linen provides that little extra comfort and all the rooms have en-suite shower rooms, elegantly tiled in marble and with WC & wash hand basin.  Each room has its own small balcony with patio furniture and all but 2 rooms have 'full frontal' seaviews.

Location of Hotel Porto Loutro twin
Loutro, Crete

Tiny, blue-shuttered whitewashed houses, nestling beside a sapphire and turquoise sea. Sleepy waterside tavernas with rugged mountain backdrops, the gentle tinkling of goat bells and a sense of timelessness and peace. Set around a sheltered bay, with its pebbled beach disappearing into crystal clear water, Loutro has the somewhat unique attraction of no roads, no cars and just the odd donkey or wheelbarrow for local transportation. ...More about Loutro >>

A magical holiday
"Thank you for a magical holiday, we really liked Loutro. Will be in touch soon for the next one! "

Relax and do nothing
"This year we decided to go away for a week and for once to relax and do nothing. Loutro seemed ideal- a trip on the ferry and voila- no cars, nowhere to go, no gallavanting off to visit sites, museums or getting up at 5am to walk up a mountain!! (although I suppose we could have done a Gorge or two!) We did manage a couple of evening walks up above the village and across to Phoenix which is even more tranquil than Loutro. The Hotel Loutro was ideal- climbing up the steps to Loutro 2 gave us a bit of exercise and Alison the owner told us that Loutro 1 is perfect either side of August when it isn't so busy- and you can go straight out of your room into the sea for an early morning swim. The Hotel was clean, small, friendly and cool- the views from the balcony were amazing - it was perfect. It wasn't too busy in Loutro even though we were there in August- lots of Greeks and Italians on holiday and the ferry brought in a few more visitors each day. The sea is perfect for swimming and snorkelling- we took out a little canoe a couple of times too. We tried several of the tavernas- our favourite was a little taverna set back from the waters edge. Lovely home cooked family food- deep fried courgettes were delicious. Also the internet cafe where they serve good coffee and satisfied Phil's need for a newspaper by providing a Daily Mail each day!! Your representative in Chania was very helpful - we exchanged text messages and she confirmed the flights for us. We had a really relaxing time and intend returning. "

Mr & Mrs Smith - Jan 2004
"The accommodation at Hotel Porto Loutro was excellent. We were able to use probably the best room in Loutro at no extra charge and it was very much appreciated."
