Crete on Two Wheels - Cycling Tours in Crete
Touring Crete by car can be very rewarding, but common
sense suggests that to experience the full gamut of its sights, sounds and fragrant
aromas one needs to draw closer to nature.
The exhilaration of freewheeling downhill with the wind in the hair may be a
distant memory to some, but in Crete it’s still surprisingly easy to accomplish
almost regardless of age and fitness levels.
There are various tours available from leisurely half-day recreational trips
to full day excursions. The day begins with a relaxing drive up into the mountains
in a minibus pulling a trailer for the bikes. At the starting point the bikes
are unloaded and an experienced guide will accompany you back downhill towards
the coast on minor roads and tracks through spectacular scenery. Naturally there
will be a few soft uphill stretches, but if the going gets too tough for you,
there’s always the option to ride in the service vehicle that accompanies
each tour. On some of the full day trips you will also have the opportunity to
leave the bikes behind and hike down (max. 21/2 hrs.) some of Crete’s most
beautiful and remote gorges before meeting up again with the minibus.
Equipment includes riding helmets and Scott Mountain Bikes, with junior models
for children, minimum age 7 years, plus free baby seats & helmets for infants
up to 20kg.
For the fit enthusiast, full day mountain bike tours are also available without
the service vehicle and covering distances of between 85km - 112km with demanding
ascents and descents totalling 1100 metres or more!
Approx. prices for cycling or mountain biking:
Full Day £35 Adults, £24 Children up to 12 yrs.
Half Day £22 Adults, £15 Children up to 12 yrs.
Infants Free.
If you prefer to do your own thing, mountain bikes are also available for hire.
All tours and/or bike hire are arranged through Hellas Bikes in Platanyas and
are available to clients staying at any of our properties in the Chania area.
Safety Note: Helmets should be worn at all times so wind in the hair is
best kept as memory!
