Panayiotis' Village Houses, Agios Pavlos, Crete

Renovated in sympathetic style from Panayiotis's, old family home and barn in the sleepy, leafy hamlet of Agios Pavlos, 1km from Gavalohori the houses are hidden from the village street by large double entrance doors. Behind the doors, a rustic hallway, supported by lovely old stone arches, leads through to a courtyard under a green canopy grapevine from which the entrances to the houses lead. Here in the courtyard you'll also find a large purpose built barbecue complete with Cretan oven, further sunny terraces, a garden, a well and a shady walnut tree.
It's just 3 kms to the nearest beach at Kera, via the tracks that criss cross the countryside, but if you prefer a less bumpy ride then the lovely sandy beaches at Almerida are less than a 10 minute drive away. The village of Gavalohori is a pleasant 20 minutes walk away if the days not too hot, and if you are there around lunchtime you may bump into Panayiotis who works for the local electricity company and tends to frequent the shady Cafenion at the top of the square.  You will also find 3 tavernas, a minimarket, a bakery and even a small museum run by the woman's co-operative where they make and sell local handicrafts
If just enjoy peace and quiet, the sound of birds in the trees and sublime pastoral views across the Cretan countryside, you've found it, this is the place to be....

 Sophia's House (Panayiotis' House II) , Gavalohori, Crete

Across the courtyard is the entrance to Panayiotis' second house,  Sophia’s House, once a simple stone cart shed it has been painstakingly converted into an originally designed two bedroom house named after Panayiotis’ mother. Furnished in a simple Cretan country style with characteristic panelled ceilings and exposed stonework around the window frames the open plan ground floor accommodates a well equipped kitchen/dining area and cosy living room with a Cretan sofa by an open fire.  The bathroom is also at this level.  The twin and double bedrooms on the first floor are accessed from a gallery, overlooking the living room.  Also at this level is  the entrance to Sophia’s House’  private and wonderfully spacious sunbathing terrace.
