Wild flowers in the White Mountains

Villa specialist Freelance Holidays is highlighting May Villas in Crete as the perfect ‘collision’ of early sun with low prices.

 A perfect base for nature lovers, Barba Yannis is a newly-renovated house in the hill top hamlet of Kastellos, with breath-taking views to the north coast, seven kilometres away.  The high, beamed ceilings and terracotta tiled floors keep this townhouse cool.  The romantic double bedroom is tucked into the eaves overlooking the living area and boasts not only a dressing room but its own small terrace.  A second, small double is also available. 

With winding steps down to the free-form pool (shared with three other similarly-converted properties), Barba Yannis is a perfect off-season hideaway.  Villa Rental in May is just £85 per night for the fully-equipped townhouse, or £595 for a week’s stay.

Also new for 2011 season, Villa Amvrosia, boasts an indoor Jacuzzi pool – ideal for early season visits when the outdoor, unheated pool may be chilly.  Amvrosia is just outside the village of Armeni, between the White Mountains and the sea: foodie heaven with three first-class tavernas and a well-stocked delicatessen, with a daily delivery of fresh bread and a choice of simple cafenions.  

Sleeping up to five, the villa in crete  is on three separate levels, with an open-plan first-floor living area, the outdoor pool set in decking at tree-top level and the Jacuzzi pool on the lower level.   At £121 per night in May, a week’s villa holiday for five is £847.

Flights and car hire are not included.  Crete is well-served by EasyJet, Jet2.com and charters including Thomsonfly, Avro and First Choice.

Six new villas with pools have been added to Freelance Holidays’ Mallorcan programme for 2011. The specialist, which focuses on Mediterranean islands, has also added apartments in Puerto Pollença to an expanded mallorca villas programme.   

Typical of the new properties is Ca’n Alou, quietly tucked down a long drive, surrounded by almond orchards and with inspiring views of craggy Castell di Santueri.  It is only five kilometres from the sandy beach, fishing harbour and inviting bars of Porto Colom. 

Lovingly restored, the result is quintessentially Mallorcan, with high, beamed ceilings, exposed stone walls and cool tiled floors. The styling is ‘simple traditional’ and yet up to date in terms of the well-equipped kitchen and shining bathroom.  One double and one twin bedroom make the villa perfect for small families or couples alike. 

Outside, the covered terrace is furnished for both dining and lazing.  The sparkling tiled pool, with wide steps at the villa end and a purpose-built barbecue at the far side, is surrounded by sun terraces and lawns.

As with all Freelance Holidays’ mallorca villas , Ca’n Alou can be booked online for any-day-arrival and flexible stays from five nights upwards.  Nine nights’ villa rental in May costs from £1,029, while 12 nights in August is from £2,983, including mid-week maid service.

Other new villas in mallorca  include Son Albaricoquer, surrounded, as its name suggests, by apricot trees.  The house can sleep eight and as well as its own pool, boasts a half-size snooker table in the downstairs den.  The nearest bars and shops are in Cas Concos, 20 minutes’ stroll away, with the pretty harbours of Cala Figera and Porto Petro both within 20 minutes’ drive.  A week in August costs from £2,495. 

 Elsewhere in the Mallorca villas programme, deals for April holidays include Cana Joana, where seven nights’ rental starting 1 April is reduced from £675 to £595, for a villa sleeping up to six with a private pool set in 10,000 acres!

Lunch time in Sicily

Ryanair have just announced they are launching daily flights starting on 27th March from Stansted direct to Palermo, its a bit of an early start (06.10) flight out, but you could be in Villa  Carlotta e Frederica  and have swam in the cristal clear waters before lunch !.

Other flights to Sicily include easyjet 3/4 times a week from Gatwick to Palermo, or Luton to Trapani flts with Ryanair 3 times a week.
