Pericles Beach Villa, Sfinari, Crete

On the edge of the small rural community of Sfinari, this beach villa stands on a large plot of land overlooking the sea, just where the little beach road from the village meets the coast and takes a sharp left bend in the direction of the three fish tavernas, bordering the shingle beach a mere 600 metres stroll away.

Originally the home of a humble charcoal maker and inherited by his great, great grandson Pericles, a talented musician and violin player of some international repute, this erstwhile modest stone cottage has been miraculously transformed into a remarkable beach villa  with the odd unexpected indulgence, like flood lights set to illuminate the ocean at night.

Spacious terraces of crazy paving surround the house on three sides with a purpose built barbecue to the rear beyond which is a large area of lawn. To the side of this beach villa is the 9m x 5m pool complete with a small children's pool and a remarkably handsome palm tree. The front terrace overlooks the sea and is the place to sit and enjoy the sunsets as well as alfresco meals accompanied by the ever present sound of the sea.

Inside, the beach villa is furnished and decorated in Pericles original style. On the ground floor the spacious open plan living area has high beamed ceilings supported by extravagantly thick stone walls, now mainly plastered but with randomely  exposed areas of original stone work . At one end is a well equipped kitchen and dining area with full cooker, microwave, dishwasher and capacious fridge freezer. Nearby, a large solid dining table provides dining space for all and a  sitting area  has lovely views out to the sea by virtue of the large windows which intirgueingly concertina back, giving a wonderful inside/outside feeling to the room. There is a further attractive lounge area with 2 comfortable sofas, plus TV, DVD and Hi Fi system - and from here a staircase climbs to the first floor level  where patio doors open onto the generous terraces supplied with comfortable bamboo patio furniture to relax and enjoy the sublime sea and mountain views. 

At this level is the spacious master bedroom with queen size double bed and semi circular hydro massage bath as well as an en-suite shower room. French windows on either side of the bedroom  lead to sea or mountain facing terraces so that you needn't miss out on either spectacle of  sun rising over the mountains and the evening delight of it setting  into the sea. 

Across the hallway  is a twin bedroom with a small en-suite shower room and patio doors to the upper terrace and, of course, sea views. The third bedroom is double bedded and situated on the ground floor at the far end of the living area with windows overlooking the pool and the rear garden. There is an adjoining full bathroom.

It's a rare thing to find a house in a position such as Pericles  Beach Villa  - with beach and  tavernas within an easy walk  and lacking  the 'gloss' of a more tourist location and will appeal to those seeking the 'essence' of Crete. 

NB. The small road to the beach tavernas passes to the side of the beach villa , so cars will pass by from time to time especially at weekends.
