Yiannis House, Spilia, Crete

At Yiannis House you can benefit from the best of both worlds, by wholeheartedly enjoying the relaxed ambience of Cretan village life, whilst at the same time indulging yourself a little with a private swimming pool.

Approached via a steep narrow lane this appealing little cottage is situated on the hillside just above the church on the edge of the village with vineyards and olive groves to the side. The house stands in its own small garden, with a covered terrace at the front where a patio table and chairs are screened from all things holy by exotic palms and a mass of bougainvillaea.

From the terrace, an entrance door leads into an attractive open plan living area with a high sloping beamed ceiling and floors of local stone. In one corner is an L shaped fitted sofa, prettily decorated with embroidered Cretan rugs. An archway from the living room leads through to a hallway with a door off to the twin bedroom and a small shower room with WC and wash hand basin. Just beyond is a sunny kitchen equipped with a full cooker, large fridge freezer, a neat little run of cupboards and also a convenient door to a small patio overlooking the inviting 7m x 3m pool, ready and waiting for those who prefer a swim before breakfast or even before dressing - don't let the priest catch you though.

Guests should note that on Sundays and Saint's days the church bells will ring intermittently from 8am to 10am and as the saying goes, there's no rest for the wicked!
For those who prefer some contact with the outside world, the house also has a small satellite TV which has restricted English channels. There's also a portable barbecue on the terrace and the fitted sofa in the living room can be used as a bed for a child.

Finally, for those hot nights in high summer, Yianni's Cottage has air-conditioning in the bedroom.
