Abba Virde Apt, Cala Gonone, Sardinia

If you are as fit as we are, you may need to stop en route for a moment or two as you climb the 150 metres of narrow streets spliced with small flights of steps that wind up from Cala Gonone harbour. However, do persevere for when you turn the last corner you'll be rewarded with a view to really take your breathe away, that's if you have any left of course!

Paint a picture in your mind of terracotta tiled roofs and an expanse of Sardinian sea of the deepest magenta blue, add a harbour the shape of a horse shoe, dab in a flotilla or two of little boats, frame it with mountains and breathe deeply, you're almost there.

We should also mention that you can choose to drive up and down to the apartment by car, by passing any steps en route C9.

Descending the few steps to the lower level of three apartments, Abbe Virdes enormously appealing garden seems to float above Cala Gonone in It's own little world between sea and sky, where the blue of the sea is framed by green foliage in mesmerising fashion. Its difficult to immediately assimilate all the garden's numerous nooks and crannies, invariably caught in lovely dappled sunlight and each with a different view of the Sardinian sea. Within the garden's perimeter is a pretty pond inhabited by turtles and koi-carp, a purpose built barbecue, lots of flowers and shrubs, plus three impossibly perched pineapple palms.

A large picture window that looks out over the pond allows the garden to cast its spell over the open plan living room in a most beguiling way. There's a sofa and chair if you want to relax with a book or watch TV, plus a simple wooden dining table and chairs. Beyond here is a small fitted kitchen with a 4-ring gas hob & fridge-freezer .

The bedrooms share an attractive, white and turquoise tiled shower room, also containing a washing machine.

N.B. In some places the fence around the garden is no more than 60cms high, protecting a steep drop. We therefore consider that this apartment is not suitable for younger children.

South of Orosei lies the village of Cala Gonone. Until recent times, this independent community of seafaring folk was only accessible by boat or on foot by a perilous path hewn out of the cliff-side. However, Cala Gonone can now be reached via a road tunnel that cuts straight through the mountainside to reveal a splendid panoramic view of the Golf of Orosei.
