Casa Anna, Cala Gonone, Sardinia
Enjoying superb panoramic sea views, Casa Anna is perched high above a bay of pink shingle sand on the southern fringes of the small resort of Cala Gonone. Part of a genteel hillside development of forty or so terraced and privately owned holiday apartments, Casa Anna, was by far the nicest one we were offered, being particularly well furnished and maintained, plus having the advantage of a pretty little garden to the rear, complete with shady purpose built barbecue area.
Mellow summer days begin with breakfast on the terrace, accompanied by unbroken seascapes. Green shuttered patio doors lead into the neat open plan living area, with table and chairs positioned to optimise the views and a sofa to the side. To the rear of the room the spruce little kitchen has a 4 ring gas hob and large fridge-freezer plus attractive stained pine cupboards and polished granite work surfaces.
From the kitchen, a pine door opens into the entrance hallway, off which are two bedrooms, sharing a nicely tiled shower room. The double bedroom although small, is very attractive and welcoming with fitted pine wardrobes either side of the bed and a lovely window that captures the early morning sun and looks out over the sea.
The second bedroom, ideal for children, has bunk beds with a window towards the garden which slopes upward in small terraces towards the private access road to the rear. Hidden away amongst the fauna, is an outside shower and a very attractive brick built barbecue, complete with covered terrace and a marble table, perfect for alfresco meals, with the deep blue just visible over the apartment's terracotta roof tiles.
From the private road, below the front of the apartments, it's a 10-minute walk via a steepish footpath, down to the beach and then a further 10 or 15 minutes along the seafront into town.
For a change of scene and totally natural surroundings, a 5 minute drive southward will bring you to a parking spot at the end of the road from where stone steps lead steeply down to the lovely little cove of Cala Fuili. This is also the starting point of the footpath that leads to the celebrated Cala Luna beach, a two-hour walk according to the local guidebook, with the option of catching a boat back to the harbour in Cala Gonone, if returning on foot proves too much.

Cala Gonone, Sardinia
South of Orosei lies the village of Cala Gonone. Until recent times, this independent community of seafaring folk was only accessible by boat or on foot by a perilous path hewn out of the cliff-side. However, Cala Gonone can now be reached via a road tunnel that cuts straight through the mountainside to reveal a splendid panoramic view of the Golf of Orosei. From the tunnels exit, a steep and winding road leads down through wooded hillsides, until you reach the village centre with its tree-lined promenade, restaurants, shops, fine sandy beaches and colourful fishing harbour. ...More about Cala Gonone >>
