Villa Clio, Pano (Upper) Stalos, Crete
Lemon tinted walls and baby blue shutters adorn the outside of Villa Clio, perched on a plateau towards the top of a small hill, with outstanding views. On the edge of a scattering of select Villas, privacy is secured by natural rock faces, gardens and open hillsides on two aspects so that the gardens really feel as though they are in a world set apart yet , the closest beach, long and sandy, is less than five minutes away by car and the pretty traditional village of Pano Stalos is a two minute drive from the villa, where you can find a small mini-market and three traditional tavernas offering exceptional local cooking.
The open plan living area is largely given over to the kitchen where wood cupboards, edged with blue are topped by an adequate run of worktops with a dishwasher, full 4 hob cooker and oven, microwave, and a large fridge with the bonus of an ice maker just by the French doors to the front terrace where a handy small table and chairs sit.
A large marble topped table provides overflow workspace, with seating for dining and it’s three steps down from here to the small living area, with an open fire and an L shaped sofa. From the living area two sets of French doors open, one to the front terrace and the other to a covered dining area within stone arches and with the luxury of an overhead fan for when the temperatures rise.
A ground floor twin bedroom is nicely furnished with beds that can be pushed together to make a double and it has French doors opening to the arched dining area. Next door is a full shower room with shower cubicle.
On the first floor are a double bedroom with an ensuite Jacuzzi corner bath with a shower attachment and a twin bedroom with ensuite Jacuzzi shower room. Both bedrooms have French doors to a terrace with outstanding views, furnished with an umbrella and chairs.
As comfortable and well equipped as the interior of this Villa is, it is the outside space which really singles it out. A rock wall with plants growing naturally from the crevices backs the whole area which then opens out to a flat plateau with mature plantings with paths, terraces and little sitting areas all blessed with a story book view framed by the sea. In the foreground, olive groves, hillsides and the white and pastel coloured walls and church tower of the Village of Upper Stalos, which is, incidentally within walking distance for those who are fit enough to take on the 1 km hilly walk.
The free form tiled pool (1m to 1.6 m deep) is supplemented by two smaller children’s pools, from which water spills over into the main pool.
Please note that small children will need to be supervised at all times in the smaller pools and older children must not jump or dive from one pool to another owing to the shallow depths.
Beyond the pool and pleasantly shaded by trees is a lawn and a lovely barbecue.
If you can drag yourselves away you will discover the region offers plenty. A further extensive choice of tavernas, cafes and small shops can be found close to the beach and the pretty harbour town of Chania with its colourful history and pretty streets is a fascinating place to visit by day or evening.

7 km west of Chania, the village of Lower Stalos fringes a long, sandy beach with the island of Theodorou, said to be a petrified sea monster, rising from the sea just a short distance off shore. 1km inland the small village of Upper Stalos nestles serenely on the hillside amidst a patchwork of vineyards and olive groves.
