Aqua Dolce Apt 4, Cala Gonone, Sardinia
Fabio, our old friend, who is a local diving instructor, enthuses about the position of these apartments and the fact that they are a handy 150 metres from his dive boat on Cala Gonone Harbour and 50 metres from the restaurant Il Pescatore, the best fish restaurant in town if not the whole Gulf of Oresei, with the sweetest scallops you're ever likely to taste.
Named after the cliffs to which they cling, this pastel pink apartment building has an air of Italian chic, with its shining marble vestibule from where stairs ascend to either the first or second floor, where our apartments are to be found.
There are a total of 9 apartments all with a slightly different layout according to their position to the front or the side of the building. Each apartment is furnished in the same bright and modern style with turquoise stained wood furnishings in the bedrooms, a gleaming tiled shower room and a small, well appointed kitchen/dining room. The living area for much of the summer is the covered balcony to the front, which although provided with patio furniture rather than soft furnishings, any lack of comfort is more than compensated by the surreal views of the iridiscent sea, a few metres away across the promenade.
The two bedroom apartments we have chosen offer the best full frontal sea views, with an entrance door opening into the kitchen/dining area complete with 4 ring cooker, fridge and plenty of cupboard space, plus patio doors to the covered balcony. From the kitchen and off a small hallway is the main bedroom with twin beds matrimonial style, and superb, cruise liner sea views. Opposite this bedroom is the shower room, plus a second smaller bedroom with twin beds. Please note this bedroom has one high window that opens onto the central stairwell or lobby, but no exterior window, so if you are drawing straws for bedrooms, you'll need to concentrate!
From the harbour you can hop on a boat to one of the fabulous beaches south of the town, or even hire your own Zodiac inflatable and go freelance! In the other direction and just 50 metres from the apartments, the promenade comes to an abrupt end as the cliffs descend directly into the sea. From here, a footpath follows the coastline mile upon mile northwards all the way to Orosei, passing wonderful spots to picnic, or bathe from the rocks and where we hear there are tiny hidden beaches waiting to be discovered, but that might be Italian hype, please let us know.
There's also a convenient sandy beach just beyond the harbour, which we can definitely vouch for.

Cala Gonone, Sardinia
South of Orosei lies the village of Cala Gonone. Until recent times, this independent community of seafaring folk was only accessible by boat or on foot by a perilous path hewn out of the cliff-side. However, Cala Gonone can now be reached via a road tunnel that cuts straight through the mountainside to reveal a splendid panoramic view of the Golf of Orosei. From the tunnels exit, a steep and winding road leads down through wooded hillsides, until you reach the village centre with its tree-lined promenade, restaurants, shops, fine sandy beaches and colourful fishing harbour. ...More about Cala Gonone >>
