Topolia Village Hse 1, Topolia, Crete
Below the road that passes through the village and tucked away in a warren of narrow streets that cling to the side of the valley, these four mellow stone houses, are the pride and joy of the widow, Argyro and were originally part of her rambling family home, which must have been the size of Knossos!. When we first saw the houses some five years ago they were just dilapidated ruins but subsequently, Argyro's two sons who are carpenters by trade have painstakingly renovated them and produced four authentic, but eminently comfortable cottages. Argyro, who still cooks the most delicious cheese pies, must be well in to her seventies by now and has worked hard all her life. Until quite recently she did the cleaning in the cottages but now semi-retired, she just greatly enjoys meeting her English guests and probably secretly marvels at the fact that foreigners are living in her old family home, which until 5 years ago didn't even have an inside loo!
The cottages which have been furnished in traditional Cretan village style also retain many of their original features such as lovely stone archways and rough hewn beamed ceilings. However 20th century influences then hold sway and each cottage is fully air conditioned, with modern well appointed bathrooms or shower rooms, some with hydro massage baths.
The kitchens likewise have all mod cons including full electric cooker, fridge freezer, dish washer, microwave and washing machine, as well as toaster, electric kettle, juicer, coffee maker and so on. Each cottage also has a telephone, Satellite TV and CD cassette player.
The cottages vary in size from one to four bedrooms, mostly with en-suite facilities. All the cottages have generous living areas as well as their own private terraces or balconies and share a lovely 12m x 3m pool with fabulous views towards the sea across the terracotta rooftops of the village.
Please note: We do not provide our normal maid service at the Topolia Village Houses. The houses will be clean for you're arrival and the beds made up, but there will be no further maid service during your stay. A change of bed linen will be provided every three or four days for clients to make-up their own beds.
Topolia, Crete
Tumbling down one side of the valley just below the entrance to the impressive Topolia Gorge, the village straddles the road that runs south to Paleochora or west to Elafonisi and is remarkably pretty with its church and steeple and myriad white houses, set against the green of the valley. ...More about Topolia >>
