Villa Eleni, Douliana, Crete
At the head of a green valley, Villa Eleni is set in a small enclave of Crete holiday villas on the edge of Douliana and although traditional in design, this Crete holiday Villa encompasses all the benefits of modern living for the perfect Crete villa holiday, even English Plumbing, and offers more than a modicum of elegance, both within and without its mellow, terracotta tinted walls. The infinity pool certainly catches the eye and is perfectly positioned to provide glorious sea and valley views.
The open plan living area with its lofted ceiling provides a welcome haven on hot summer days with two sets of patio doors leading out to a choice of terraces and encouraging a cooling zephyr or two to gently stir the air.
For cosy evenings en famille, two comfortable sofas and a large coffee table are grouped around an open fireplace with attractive rosewood mantelpiece, whilst at the far end of the room the smart fitted kitchen comes complete with a Neff electric cooker with ceramic hob, small dishwasher, large fridge freezer, plus a microwave. A solid wood dining table comfortably seating six is conveniently situated nearby and the holiday villa is supplied with a good selection of crockery and cooking equipment, courtesy of its English owners, who are ex Freelancers no less!
The villa's two bedrooms are situated off an internal hallway beyond the sitting area. The master bedroom, with en-suite shower room, has a king size double bed, with pocket sprung mattress and there's a generous length of fitted wardrobes against one wall in a delicate rosewood hue. This bedroom also has double doors leading out to the terrace with lovely views down the valley to the crete sea and a perfect spot for breakfast.
The second bedroom is twin bedded, again with abundant fitted wardrobe space and two sets of windows to give it a bright and sunny disposition. Also off the small hallway are a well-appointed and gleaming full bathroom, plus a small closet housing a washing machine.
A terracotta-tiled patio encircles the house with a crazy paving pathway leading to the pool passed colourful flowered borders. Below, the tangled olive terraces drop down steeply to the valley floor and if you care to explore, you will find an abundance of quiet nooks and crannies for a shared siesta with Mother Nature.
Alternatively you can settle for the afternoon in the shade of the living room porch with a good novel for company and later perhaps enjoy drinks around the marble table on the roof terrace, with panoramic views of the White Mountains to the south and westward to distant Cape Drapanos.
For day to day groceries it's a 5 minute walk to the mini-market just off the village square, via a rustic 50 metre track that leads up to the main road, passing the picturesque old Venetian house and handy lemon trees of Manolis the carpenter. Yianni's wonderfully traditional Cretan village taverna is a further 5 minutes walk away, down the short cut to the beach.
Child Note: Beyond the pool terraces, there's a 2 metre drop down to the old olive groves and we therefore consider that Villa Eleni is not suitable for children under 10 years of age. The pool dimensions are 7m x 4m with a minimum depth of 1m and 2.2m at the deep end.
