Hotel Dimitra, Almirida, Crete
For a number of years we have been keen to extend our choice of hotel accommodation in Crete and this small, informal A class hotel with just 37 rooms and very friendly and helpful staff, was just what we were looking for! Quietly situated on the outskirts of Almirida it's a five minute stroll into the centre of the village and less than 200 metres from the gently shelving sandy beach that adjoins the small fishing harbour.
The pool area is particularly inviting with lawned gardens on two sides, masses of flowering shrubs and lovely views towards the White Mountains. A pathway from the pool leads to the spacious dining room where the buffet style breakfast and dinner are served and you will be pleasantly surprised at the very reasonable bar tariff and the good selection of local wines. If you prefer your breakfast alfresco, you're welcome to wander down to the pool terrace or alternatively, there's a very pleasant covered terrace to the rear of the hotel with lovely pastoral views across rolling countryside to the distant mountains. To the side of the dining room is a comfortable lounge with sofas and easy chairs and TV and here there's also a further bar used in early and late season.
The hotel bedrooms are all twin bedded, nicely furnished and quite spacious with french windows to a balcony with patio furniture and with sea or mountain views. The smart, marble tiled en-suite bathrooms all have full bath and shower attachment, plus wash hand basins with a generous big mirror. In the bathroom, there's also a door to a separate WC. The bedrooms are at ground or first floor level and there's a convenient lift from the stylish marble tiled reception area.
Other amenities include a tennis court, which is free of charge to guests during the day, but with a small charge payable locally for floodlights at night.
Due to its sheltered position, Almirida is an excellent place to learn windsurfing or dingy sailing, and lessons and/or boat and board hire can be arranged through the local representative of UCPA, a French Tour Operator whose young clients, in their twenties and thirties, also stay at the hotel, creating a fun loving, cosmopolitan atmosphere. Older folk, may find these youngsters a bit garrulous at meal times, but then, they are just being French!
NB. Our prices are per twin room per week on a bed & breakfast basis. Triple rooms are available on request.
